When people research their next protein powder, most concentrate solely on protein per serving, or sugar per serving, or overall cost. They might also look at added extras such as creatine. One thing that many people overlook is taste.
But this is crazy! If you’re buying in bulk (and if you’re looking to save money long term then you absolutely should be), then you are going to be stuck with this protein powder for the next 2-3 months. Now imagine that when you try it out after spending money on it, the protein tastes like garbage!
Luckily for you, we have compiled a list of ten of the best-tasting protein powders out there, we’ve also ensured that each and every one comes from a reputable company that makes high-quality protein powders.
One thing that should be made clear before we start, just like music and comedy, taste is subjective. While some people may love the taste of blue cheese, others will hate it with a passion. You can’t please everyone all of the time, and this review is based on our own personal tastes. Where possible we have tried to find flavors that the majority of reviewers also enjoy, ensuring that we’re in-line with the mainstream when it comes to top flavor choices.
We’ve looked at ISO-100 by Dymatize before, and it is a truly fantastic protein shake. It contains 25g of protein per serving, 5.5g of BCAAs, and only 110 calories. With only 1g of sugar per serving you could be forgiven for thinking that taste may be a letdown. Not so! With around 10 flavors to choose from ISO-100 has a huge range that will suit most people. However, Birthday Cake flavor definitely comes out on top as the most popular choice.
MTS Machine is another great protein powder in its own right, with 25g of protein, 5g of BCAAs and 5g of Glutamine. The most popular flavor is Peanut Butter Fluff, and it is fantastic. For starters, anything that tastes of peanut butter but is low calorie is going to be awesome because real peanut butter is one of the most calorie-dense foods imaginable. But other than chocolate, peanut butter is one of the most versatile flavors that you can use. Cooking with peanut butter fluff protein is really good, and there are a huge number of protein recipes that would really benefit from this flavor.
Syntha-6 from BSN comes in a variety of flavors, each one could easily go on this list, seriously check out their reviews online. Cinnamon bun, Graham Cracker, Peanut Butter Cookie, all get rave reviews. But Chocolate Milkshake stands out for us as their best flavor! The protein powder itself is top of the range, with 24g of protein per serving, 11g of Essential amino acids, and only 150 calories per serving.
Every time we review a BPI product we always talk about them being high quality, and their best protein range is no exception. Each shake contains no fillers, 24g of protein (from a mixture of whey concentrate/isolate/and hydrolysate), and 5g of BCAAs. The flavors available are vast, but in our opinion, Snickerdoodle is the best. Salted Caramel and S’mores get an honorable mention.
There are a lot of cinnamon flavored protein shakes out there, and Cinnamon Swirl flavor by Cor-Performance could be the best of the bunch. Not only is this a great protein shake to drink on its own, but it is also fantastic for protein pancakes, or homemade protein bars. The protein powder itself is of excellent quality, with 24g of protein per serving and 5g of BCAAs.
Here we have a protein powder that not only smells great but tastes amazing too. You might be forgiven for thinking that a product named chocolate cupcake will just taste like chocolate. There are many chocolate protein powders out there, and while a lot of them have different titles, they all end up tasting of chocolate.
Not so with Frosted Chocolate Cupcake from PES, this tastes and smells like an actual cupcake. Meaning that it smells like cupcake batter, with chocolate frosting. A very different taste. There is 24g of protein per serving and this is one of the best powders for mixing, with almost no effort needed to get a clump-free drink.
What’s pretty cool about BPI’s Granola crunch protein is that it actually has little pieces of granola inside it. This is going to be a love it or hate it kinda deal, as a lot of people want a protein shake that is smooth. But, if you’re looking for something a little bit different then Granola Crunch is a great choice. The taste is quite light as it is granola with vanilla.
This protein works really well when mixed with yogurt or with oats (or both), and would also work great as a base for some protein desserts. There are 25g of protein per serving and only 4g of carbohydrates, so perfect for granola lovers on a diet.
Yeah, we know, the flavor variety in the MYPROTEIN popular Impact Whey lineup can be overwhelming, that’s why we have this list! There are a few great flavors in the huge list of 22 flavors. But, Salted Caramel stands above them all in our opinion. Beyond being usually, the best value for money protein on the market, the Impact Whey brings in solid macro nutrients profile and very good mixability.
We’ve already looked at a MTS Machine whey protein flavor on this list, and we are unashamedly adding another one. Key Lime Pie from MTS is a show-stopping protein flavor, with bits of Graham Cracker added in (just like with Granola Crunch from BPI). As with Peanut Butter Fluff flavor there is 25g of protein per serving, 5g of BCAAs, and 5g of Glutamine. Great tasting protein shake which has an excellent nutrition profile, what more could you ask for?
Another Dymatize product to round off the list, this time it is from their Elite range. There’s 25g of protein per serving with 5.5g of BCAAs, and only 140 calories. Cafe Mocha was designed to taste like a delicious mug of coffee, and it does exactly that. The first thing you notice is the smell when you open the lid, and the taste is excellent. Try it blended with ice and milk for an iced coffee that’s high in protein and low in calories (and obviously caffeine free).
