Frequently Asked Questions
I thought these bars are supposed to be low in carbs, so why does it say there are 23 grams?
While there are 23 grams of carbs that the FDA has required us and other companies to include for these types of products, all but 2.5 of the grams come from sugar alcohols, which have almost no impact on blood sugar levels. Therefore, we count 2.5 grams of carbs as the net impact ones and the ones you should count in your diet.
What is maltitol?
The Calorie Control Council states that maltitol is a reduced calorie bulk sweetener with sugar-like taste and sweetness. Its stability, high sweetness, and structure make it suitable for a variety of reduced-calorie, reduced-fat and sugar-free foods. Maltitol does not promote tooth decay. Maltitol is a member of a family of bulk sweeteners known as polyols or sugar alcohols. It has a pleasant sweet taste–remarkably similar to sucrose. Maltitol is about 90% as sweet as sugar, non-cariogenic, and significantly reduced in calories.
What is a sugar alcohol?
Sugar alcohols are ingredients used for taste. They occur naturally in foods and come from plant products, such as fruits. As a sugar substitute, sugar alcohols provide about half the amount of calories than ordinary sugar. This is because they are converted to glucose less rapidly, require no insulin to be metabolized and don’t cause increases in blood sugar.
