The ESP from Metabolic Nutrition is the first pre-workout product the company released. It is advertised as “most effective, high-energy, no crash, fast-acting pre-workout stimulant on the market”. That’s a mouthfull for sure
The first problem we have with the ESP’s label is that it is a proprietary blend, which is perfectly fine, but then we saw that not only they didn’t mention the dosages of the ingredients inside the blend, they didn’t mention the dose of the blend at all. Looks pretty suspicious to us. They also have a different way to calculate servings, as the ESP comes with a two-headed scoop, one smaller than the other.
The E.S.P. Pre-Workout Proprietary Matrix consists of – Beta Alanine Citrate, 1,3,7-Trimethylpurine-2,6-dione, Methyl Pentane Citrate HCl, 3,7-dimethyl-1H-purine-2,6-dione, N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine, Picamilon, Choline Bitartrate, Calcium Glycerol Gluconate, Magnesium Glycerol Gluconate, Potassium Glycerol Gluconate and Sodium Glycerol Gluconate. So, although we don’t know really how much of that blend there is actually in a serving, we can evaluate the blend itself. We know one thing and it is that there is 500mg of Caffeine here, which is one of the highest we ever seen in a pre workout. To add to that intense amount of Caffeine, there are a bunch more stimulants, in Methyl Pentane Citrate HCl (AMP Citrate), Tyrosine, Picamilon, Choline Bitartrate. It does have Beta Alanine which is a great endurance enhancing ingredient but without knowing the dose, we can’t be sure how effective it will be.
It also has a bunch of vitamins and minerals, but that is not interesting.
The Label’s Bottom Line- The ESP is really one of the more high-stim, intense pre-workouts we ever had experience with. Due to its intensity, we would be very carefull with the serving sizes and recommend starting with one small scoop and advance from there. The lack of doses for all the active ingredients is not what we would like to see, but we’ll have to deal with that.
Taste & Mixability – All 4 flavors taste good, nothing out of the ordinary. It might clamp a bit in the tub but that is nothing to be concerned about. Mixability is great though.
Effectiveness – You can’t say it doesn’t give you energy, and with all these stimulants it would be a shame if it didn’t. You actually feel like The Hulk after this thing. We were also impressed with the long lasting focus/energy effect that we continued to feel long after we finishing the workout. The dosing system is also great as you can really get a feel of how much of this you can handle. So even though we don’t know how much of everything is in it, we can safely say ‘this thing will kick your ass’.
The retail price for for a tub of 300g is 30$, which can turn out to be awesome value depending on your serving size. Practically, for the small scoop it is a 90 (!) serving tub. Even if you use the big scoop and turn it into a 30 serving tub, the value is pretty great. Once a while we will hunt a BOGO 50% which will drop the price per tub to the $23 range. When you see something like that and you are a stim junky, we suggest you go for it!
This ESP is something else. The intensity might scare some people off but if you are someone that finds high-stim pre-workouts your thing, this is one to try out.
