[Updated for 2018] Pre-workout supplementation can really be a savior, whether you’re coming into the gym at 6 am after a bad night’s sleep or you’re fresh off a 9-hour shift and feeling dead. There are many benefits to a good pre-workout: stimulation of the central nervous system, reduction in fatigue and the rate of perceived exertion (how difficult an exercise feels), and even increased fat-loss. This latest update to our best pre-workout list brings a new no.1 (after the previous no.1 on this list – APS Mesomorph w/DMAA, has been discontinued).
Each of the following 10 pre-workout supplements come from well-known and well-respected companies. We will look at each one individually and demonstrate what makes them special.
NTEL Pharma’s AREZ. is one of these cases where everything just comes together. Bringing in a unique package of stimulants, AREZ is not only one of the strongest pre-workouts in the market (maybe the strongest), but where it really shines, is in the ‘feel good’ category. The feeling you get when using NTEL Pharma AREZ lives to the products’ label claim (God of the gym). It is so powerful, that most of the readers of this review might want to start with half a serving to make sure you can handle the euphoric feeling that you’ll get using AREZ as a pre-workout, without getting hit too hard. But all in all, if you can handle it, you are destined to some of the best workouts of your life!
Oh my, oh my, is it the industry best pumps? is it the clean burst of energy? or maybe its actually the tunnel vision focus? No, it has to be the mood elevation! Yeah, well, its probably all of them! Olympus Labs have delivered with RE1GN what is considered by anyone that tried it (including us) one of the most rewarding pre-workout experience out there. With a stimulant and focus blend that has the largest list of ‘exotic’ stimulants in the market including several that are totally unique to RE1GN and a pump matrix includes VASO6, the hottest new N.O inducer, RE1GN has it all. No crash, no jitters, great feeling of invincibility. Let it RE1GN, you won’t be disappointed. Read our full OLYMPUS LABS RE1GN REVIEW. Or watch our full review below.
One look at the label of the SPARTA Nutrition KRAKEN and you’ll start feeling the need to go and lift something heavy and start throwing weights around. With a stimulant package that its hard to imagine a better one, and a pump matrix that is as complete as it gets, KRAKEN has it all going for it. One interesting element to note in Sparta Nutrition’s approach is that KRAKEN brings in only 200mg of caffeine to the table. But, if you think you want feel that energy kick you are wrong, as we always say, its the package not the individual ingredients. The only notable downside as we mentioned in our full review is the flavoring system, which is really not on par. But it sort of seems to be the norm with our top selections here. The bottom line is that if you like your pre-workout hard-hitting, KRAKEN should be high on your list.
Launched in late 2016, Redcon1 introduced Total War (what an awesome name) as its first product. Beyond the marketing envelope, Total War by Redcon1 is a great product with a label to prove it. Bringing in 6g of Citrulline Malate, 3.2g of Beta-Alanine, 1g Taurine, and an advanced energy & focus blend with 250mg of caffeine, DMHA & Eria Jarenesis. With this combination on its side, Total War promises & delivers an excellent pump and some serious cognitive benefits (helps with focus). Total War delivers a smooth, constant flow of energy that lasts through your workout and beyond. We love the RedCon1 flavoring system and the overall packaging. Kaged Muscle is a supplement line run by world-famous bodybuilder Kris Gethin, and this pre-workout represents everything about Kris as a person. Loud, brash, and aggressive. There has clearly been a lot of thought put into this supplement, and the complete transparency that the company has regarding its ingredients is commendable. There is 274mg of caffeine per serving that comes from green coffee beans (plus an undisclosed amount of caffeine from green coffee extract & green tea extract), there is also capsaicum which is quite effective as a fat-burner. In addition to a fully dosed N.O (pump) ingredients, Pre Kaged, brings in creatine and BCAAs which all in all result in an excellent pre-workout. Kris has also added Coconut water and B-Vitamins to the supp. Taste-wise you only get the option of fruit punch or apple! Mixability is average with some reviewers complaining of grittiness whilst drinking. Read our full Kaged Muscle Pre Kaged review.
The guys at Performax Labs went through a lot of changes in 2017. The company re-launched their complete line up under a much-improved look, moved all the products to full transparent labels and as you can see from the placing of HYPERMAX on this list, upped the game of their pre-workout! HYPERMAX has one of the more complete, super-dosed formula with head blowing amounts of caffeine, ERIA Jarenesis and 400mg (!) of PEA. The end result is – the most intense focus effect of any pre-workout on this list. Check out my full video review below. Hypermax is more than an energy boost and pumps (which it delivers on), it is a focus machine and the best on that department on this list. If laser focus in the gym is high on your list of requirements from your pre-workout, Hypermax should be your go-to product.
Created by Jim Stoppani the Bodybuilder with the PHD, Pre-Jym was voted pre-workout supplement of the year by Bodybuilding.com in 2016. It is fair to say that Pre Jym is the godfather of the fully dosed pre workouts and really started this category. There is complete transparency with the ingredients, and each one is fully dosed. With 300mg of caffeine, 6g of citrulline malate, 6g of BCAAs, 2g of creatine, and 2g of beta alanine. PRE-JYM Rained supreme for 3 years as the only real fully dosed, complete pre-workout. That changed over the last year or so with the introductions of a multitude of similar formulas. But PRE-JYM stands the test of times, and is still deserves its spot on this list.
C4 Ultimate by Cellucor is a relative newcomer from the no.1 company in the Pre-Workout space. And since its launch has been getting a lot of great reviews and for the right reasons. Each serving contains 300mg of caffeine, 6g of Citrulline Malate, 1.5g of Creatine, and many other ingredients. There are 4 flavors to choose from (Icy Blue Razz, Orange Mango, Cherry Limeade, and Strawberry Watermelon) and the mixability is great. C4 Ultimate also contains a good blend of Nootropics to help you with the focus in the gym. Read our full Cellucor C4 ULTIMATE Pre-Workout review.
Coming from CT Fletcher, one of the biggest fitness figures in the world today, Sidewalk Kraka surprised everyone by bringing in one of the best formulas the industry has seen. Fully dosed and some may say overdosed in literally any category that matters. The reason it is not a top 5 on this list is mainly due to the fact that CT totally missed it on flavor. Out of the 3 flavors available, it is fair to say that 2 are on the verge of undrinkable. But if you into function & impact rather than taste, Sidewalk Kraka would be the number 2 player in this list. Read our full Iron Addicts – Sidewalk Kraka review.
DVST8 White Cut by Inspired Nutraceuticals is an interesting pre-workout. It contains coconut water (just like Pre-Kaged) and 200mg of caffeine from 3 sources. These are, Caffeine Anhydrous, Caffeine Citrate, and Di-Caffeine Malate. A bunch of ingredients aimed to improve vascularity & pump with fully dosed L-Citrulline and a perfectly dosed endurance blend with Beta Alanine, and L-Taurine. There are five flavors available (California Gold, Galaxy Pop, Pacific Crush, Peach Sunrise, and Texas Sweet Tea).
